On page 24 of Spiritual Leadership, end of the second paragraph: are you saying that this method of multiplication of disciples is not God's plan for discpleship or simply that it is God's plan not something that Jesus developed after being given the task.

Good question. This point is clarified at the bottom of the page. The point is that the key to Jesus' leadership was not that His Father gave Him a foolproof method that can be duplicated by Jesus' followers today with equal success. The key was that Jesus sought guidance from His Father, and His Father told Him what to do. Our problem at times is that we want to simply copy the method Jesus used without copying the relationship He had with the Father. Making disciples is obviously the method Jesus has asked us to use (Matthew 28:18-20). But the specifics of how we do that will depend on how well we seek His guidance. Ultimately the key is not making disciples. It is hearing from our Lord and doing what He says! This may seem like hair splitting but I think it is a crucial distinction.

It would be so much easier if God had given us methods to follow or a procedure manual that we could mindlessly adhere to, but He require us to come before Him on bended knee each time we have a situation in order to find His best approach to each issue. The Spirit of Truth is given to each of us to inquire of Him so that our intimacy with Him is deepened every time we seek Him and follow Him. The goal is not to accomplish tasks or get some job done, it is to know God and let Him mold and shape us as vessels in His hands.
